Clinical Services : Teledermatology


Under the leadership of Dr. Anne E. Burdick, Professor of Dermatology and the Associate Dean for UM Telehealth and Clinical Outreach, the UM Telehealth team has been at the forefront of Teledermatology for over 20 years. Dr. Burdick spearheaded the first Practice Guidelines and Standards for Teledermatology in 2007 as Chair of the American Telemedicine Association (ATA) Special Interest Group in Teledermatology and is involved in updating these ATA guidelines.

Teledermatology at UM TeleHealth focuses on providing clinical care and promoting advocacy for telehealth reimbursement.

Clinical Care

In Florida, Teledermatology services are provided to children enrolled in the Children’s Medical Services network.

In collaboration with the John T. MacDonald Foundation and UM’s Department of Family Medicine, children in the North Miami School district of Miami-Dade County have access to dermatology care through telemedicine.

Enhancing employee health benefits to over 30,000 crew members of Royal Caribbean Cruise lines at sea, UM TeleHealth is the provider of teledermatology using an encrypted HIPPA compliant telemedicine software; a consultative service that was started in 2010. Since 2012, UM also provides a teledermatology consultations to Carnival Cruise Lines employees at sea.

American natives in the U.S. Health and Human Services Indian Health Services program in the Nashville region receive teledermatology consultations by an asynchronous teledermatology system. Store-and-forward teledermatology consultations are also provided by UM dermatologists to homebound individuals being cared for by Mobile Physician Services on the west coast of Florida.

Pediatric Specialties

Remote specialty teleconsultations are conducted with videoconferencing supported by UM TeleHealth in several specialty services including: cardiology, child and adolescent genetics and also newborn genetic screening, dermatology, endocrinology, neurology, nutrition, and psychiatry.

Our clients for pediatric specialty teleconsultation services include: Children’s Medical Services of the Florida Department of Health, Dr. John T. MacDonald School Health Initiative in the Miami-Dade School System, and the UM Pediatric Mobile Van Clinic.


We provide training for our customers on software and videoconferencing, with ongoing technical support.


Dr. Burdick is active in advocacy efforts for telehealth reimbursement as a Fellow in the College of Fellows of the American Telemedicine Association and as a charter member of the Florida Telehealth Workgroup.
